Frequently Asked Questions
We have had professional learning this year to develop tools, instructional practice, structures, and beliefs that are conducive to our new flexible learning environment, and the teachers are confident as professionals and excited to have an opportunity to meet students where they are. Teachers currently try to provide instructional practices that are student needs based, but it is difficult to differentiate for all when the environment does not lend to that learning. Having four teachers in one space, the teachers will be able to use their strengths to provide students what they need. The instructional time will also increase because students will not travel to the restroom.
There are four teachers in each grade level learning suite. There will also be two reading interventionists, one math interventionist, and one EL specialist that will support the students within the learning suites.
At this time, teachers feel that this will be the space to provide universal instruction to all students, and the smaller areas will be used to provide targeted and intensive interventions that are done in smaller groups.
Elwell is not at full capacity at this time. There are some grade levels that are reaching capacity.
The gym is full-size, and this is in part due to our partnership with Thompson River Parks and Recreation.
At this time, the boundary change is what was decided in May, 2021. The Board of Education would be the one to make that decision.
Pick up will be similar to drop off. We will have signs designated by grade levels, so parents know where to find their children. All of this information will be shared prior to school starting on August 30th.
Each grade level suite can effectively hold approximately 100 students.
Elwell was designed to provide optimal security. Intruders are less likely to enter a building that has high visibility. There are also lockdown features that can be activated with the push of a button enabling us to lockdown portions or many areas of the school very quickly. Fewer points of entry are also part of the design, as well as security cameras.
There are two large parking lots. There is a staff parking lot on the east side of Elwell, and there is a parent parking lot south of the school with a circle drop off area.
We get the certificate of occupancy to Elwell on August 22nd, so the teachers will need time to move in and get settled. We are planning something a little later in September or early October that will coincide with the Cornerstone Ceremony.
The teacher assignments will be ready in August which aligns with the other elementary schools in the district.
The drop off areas will be within the circle drive, as well as around the perimeter of the school, so students can go to the playground prior to school starting.
The concept is more flexible than open. With a flexible concept, we have the ability to group children based on their skill levels and needs. We have the flexibility to offer whole group, small group, and individualized instruction within the suite. This type of environment minimizes transitions and maximizes instructional time.
At this time, Elwell is projected to open on time and certificate of occupancy will be given on August 22nd.

Each student will have a homeroom teacher who will take attendance and have a “morning meeting” to begin each day. The students will be in the same group when they go to their specials (PE, Music, Art, STEM, and Library).
We will not have lockers, but each student will have a cubby for backpacks, coats, boots, etc. in the learning suites.
Yes, we will have the same SRO that is shared with Pioneer Ridge and Roosevelt High School.
This will support students going to middle school because it is a differentiated learning environment that benefits all students. We feel that students from Elwell will be very prepared for middle school.
