Weld RE5J School District

2019-2020 School Calendar

March 7, 2019

During the Weld RE-5J School Board meeting on March 6, the School Board formally approved the calendar for the 2019-20 school year. The calendar includes some exciting changes for students, teachers, and families, including the removal of the late starts at the secondary level and two 4-day weekends for students, while retaining the entire week of Thanksgiving off for students and staff.
The Weld RE-5J School District each spring creates a calendar for the upcoming school year. This calendar is created through a calendar committee consisted of teachers and administrators from each school across the district. This year additional feedback was solicited by all staff members through an online survey prior to the committee’s first meeting and a follow-up survey after the committee had met.

Throughout the process a variety of thoughts and ideas were shared in relation to student needs and professional growth of teachers across the district to better serve our students. One of the overwhelming suggestions was to remove the secondary late start days in order to make each school day more meaningful for students, by eliminating 30 minute classes every other week on late start days. In order to do that, four days were removed for student contact days to provide the same amount of professional development and planning for secondary teachers.
Additionally, the calendar committee has switched secondary half-days to full no student days at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters to provide additional professional development for staff. By making these days full no student contact days, parents have the opportunity to spend a four day weekend with in Oct and three day weekend in March with their children.
The Weld RE-5J School District calendar for the 2019-20 school year meets all statutory requirements for student-teacher contact time for all schools.
The next step in the process is for the Weld RE-5J Professional Development committee to plan meaningful professional development throughout the school year that aligns with the district vision and goals.
